Seasonal Cook: Savory ways with sweet grapefruit

When I planted two grapefruit trees a number of years ago, I knew that I wanted a white variety, not a pink one. The pinks seemed to dominate the marketplace, and while their amber rose skin and blush interior are undeniably pretty, they seemed too sweet.

I had grown up in a household where we sprinkled sugar on our breakfast grapefruit halves, which had a bright yellow skin and juicy, pale yellow segments surrounded by thick, white pith, and hardly any seeds. (Back then sweet Ruby Red and all her children hadn't yet come to rule the market.) If we were broiling our breakfast grapefruit halves, which we often did in winter, we sprinkled them with brown sugar, which melted across the sweetly acidic pulp.

I didn't realize that you could consume grapefruit any other way, except as juice, until, one Christmas when my children were small, a French friend made a salad at my house.

Scalloped potatoes for cooks in a hurry

It's very saucy with a moist, velvety texture that doesn't taste of flour," said one judge. "It also has a faint onion flavor."

Another judge detected a smoky flavor in the Betty Crocker brand.

"Small potatoes, but big taste," he said.

The Classic Casserole mix from GFS (Gordon Food Service) Marketplace was the next selection, receiving 54 points from panelists. Again, two said they would buy the brand. Mostly, they liked the size of the thinly sliced potatoes.

"These have a soft, buttery cream taste and nice flecks of herbs," said one judge.

Another compared the flavoring to onion soup mix, but said she liked the texture nevertheless.

Also sampled were scalloped potatoes byPublix ($1.19 for 5 ounces); Idahoan ($1.50 for 1.5 ounces from Publix); Kraft Velveeta ($1.76 for 10.52 ounces from Wal-Mart); Albertsons ($1.89 for 5.25 ounces); and Hannaford ($1.19 for 5.25 ounces from Sweetbay).

Ottawa proposing Manley as UN boss in Kabul

You think that such a person needs the money as a pay off??? He can easily step in private business as head of corporation, board of directors etc and be well better compensated.

Common, fellow posters, stop the negativity view on this. There is not a conspiracy behind every unturned stone, in my humble opinion. Posted 20/02/08 at 4:29 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

Bernanke Points the Way to Lower Rates

BEN BERNANKE LET IT BE KNOWN he's aware of the worsening credit crunch, which makes it reasonable to expect that he and his merry band of monetary-policy honchos will do something about on Dec. 11.

Awareness of the problem is no trivial matter. Last summer, when credit became a crisis, the charge leveled against the Federal Reserve chairman was that he was an academic too removed from the real world to know what was happening on the ground.

No criticism could be more devastating to a policy maker. I recall when our much-missed former Barron's colleague, John Liscio, dubbed John LaWare, a Fed governor in the early 1990s, "John Unaware" for his denial of the commercial real-estate crisis engulfing the thrifts and banks at the time.

But in a speech Thursday evening, Fed Chairman Bernanke explicitly took note of the deterioration in financial conditions since the Federal Open Market Committee's last meeting that ended on Oct.

Update: Girl in intensive care after train track fall

A schoolgirl who fell on tracks at Worcester Park station as she ran to catch a train is being treated in intensive care.

The 15-year-old, a student at Raynes Park High School, suffered massive blood loss in the accident and has had her spleen removed.

She also has an injured left foot, is thought to have a fractured pelvis and will undergo more surgery today.

The girl was taken away on a stretcher and rushed to St George's Hospital in Tooting as police cordoned off the accident site yesterday.

She is believed to be in a stable but serious condition and the next 48 hours are critical.

The incident caused chaos for commuters who were told to get off the 7.52am train from Epsom to London Waterloo at Worcester Park yesterday.
