| Comfort Food for Those Cold Winter Days
Coming inside from a cold, wet, wintry day and smelling a pot of simmering stew, flaky pastry on chicken pie, or a hearty macaroni and cheese casserole will bring a smile to almost everyone. One-dish meals are especially handy if you are short of time and still want a well-balanced meal for the family. Most of the ingredients are cooked together, so serving and cleanup are at a minimum. When making these recipes, think ahead and make extra for the next day, or freeze leftovers that can be used at a later date. The following recipes are easy to make and absolutely delicious. If you're not a fan of dumplings in your beef stew, make a batch of baking powder biscuits or have thick slices of multigrain bread as an alternative. If you're wanting something other than pastry on the chicken pot pie, put a layer of creamy mashed potatoes on top and brown in the oven.
Broker who prayed with clients is said to have bilked them
Some clients have put their homes up for sale; others are seeking help from bankruptcy lawyers. ''I was suicidal when I found out,'' said Sheila Kramer, 72, of Deerfield Beach, who lost $1 million. The investigation is a case study of a state regulatory system unable to stop a troubled broker who left a trail of red flags. Years before the latest wave of complaints, the Florida Division of Securities was warned about Gross -- with numerous investors stepping forward -- but no disciplinary action was taken, The Miami Herald found. To this day, Gross has one of the longest records of complaints in the nation. A Miami Herald analysis of nearly 600,000 stockbrokers found that he had more complaints against him than 99.9 percent of all brokers.
Growth can be a nightmare
It's fortunate that Poway's Town Center project has been delayed ("Poway puts town center, park remodeling projects on hold," Feb. 14). Now this controversy can be once again a hot topic in the next City Council election. Restaurants and small shops in the area are already going out of business. Why add more? Just fill up the ones that are sitting there now empty. The Poway Wal-Mart is only a couple of blocks from the proposed town center, and word is out that it is planning to expand to a Wal-Mart Supercenter, even though there is not nearly enough parking in the area. Why on earth would anyone think that a La Jolla-style cafe-and-boutique sort of shopping center would thrive amid affordable housing projects and next to a super Wal-Mart? And how can Valley Elementary School possibly be safe and focused on learning when it's surrounded by a shopping mall? .

Test your kitchen mettle with Iron Chef Morimoto's cookbook
AS a fan of cooking shows, including "Iron Chef America," this cookbook caught my eye. With full-color photos of each dish displaying some amazing food too pretty to eat, it is inspiring. Intimidating, too. But skimming through the book, I found some familiar Asian dishes. What I thought I would do was to compare his version with ones I was more familiar with cooking. After taking the book home and really reading the recipes, this seemed to be a greater challenge. Ma Po Tofu is a saucy dish of ground pork and tofu often found in Cantonese restaurants. Morimoto compares his Tofu and Spicy Pork Sauce to this dish. My recipe gets its flavor from soy sauce, oyster sauce and sesame oil, ingredients not on his ingredient list, except the soy sauce. Although my version is faster to make, Morimoto's version is more flavorful, spicier and different than most Ma Po Tofu.

Freebie Fridays Help You Save Cash
The song "When I dream of Michelangelo" is sweet, but the flip side "1492" is best saved for after you've had a couple cups of free coffee. See you next Friday! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Friday, January 18, 2008 This is a Freebie Friday that won't cost you money, but it could cost you some serious time. I'm talking about an internet golf game so new, it's only in beta right now. The people behind the website have partnered with Kiawah Island Golf Resort, taken tons of professional photos and used them to make a golf game you can play on the internet. The makers of the game say it's the most authentic online golf game out there. Since it's the only online golf game I've ever played, I can't speak to that, but I recently read a column about this game in fortune magazine.
Villa-O: From conception to opening night
The polished and repolished honey-brown mahogany glows. Waiters obsessively straighten sky-blue napkins and fluff throw pillows with nautical flags. From the white-tiled kitchen comes the thud-thud-thud of cooks pounding veal chops. Nearby, two bartenders quietly cut limes into quarter-inch slices and remove caps from liquor bottles, preparing to fill orders. And then, the customer orders a limontini. A server, in a solemn and solicitous voice, explains the problem: The orange and lemon slices have only been soaking in the vodka a few days. It will take a week for the spirits to be fully infused. Until then, the cocktail will fall flat. But the customer isn't buying the explanation. You're either ready to open or you're not ready to open, he snarls. .
Blake breezes past fellow American Warburg at San Jose ATP
A wild card, Levine posted a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Steve Darcis of Belgium on Monday. Blake is trying to erase memories of Sunday's shocking loss to Japanese teen Kei Nishikori in the final of the Delray Beach tournament. Nishikori, who became the first Japanese player since 1992 to win an ATP singles title, also is in the field here on a sponsor's exemption. He won't see Blake unless the players reach the final. But he could get a chance to pull off his second giant-killing episode in as many weeks if he gets past Diego Hartfield in the first round. His second round opponent would likely be top seeded American Andy Roddick, who begins opening round play on Wednesday. Picked off by Nishikori in the Delray Beach semi-finals, American Sam Querrey lost again Tuesday to German qualifier Denis Gremelmayr 5-7, 7-6 (7/1), 6-3.
