Cis' blog roundup - Friday

Herb phoned in the tip to our CdA bureau, which people did long before there was an internet, but this nevertheless shows how alert local bloggers can contribute to the daily news report.

Journalists love getting "the scoop," and I wanted to make sure Herb got recognized.

The Minnesota State Patrol identified the victims as Emilee, 9, Reed Stevens, 12, Jesse Javens, 13, and Javens' 9-year-old brother, Hunter. All were from Cottonwood except Reed, who was from nearby Marshall.

"When a tragedy such as this impacts a community, it is very difficult to even come up with words to talk about it," Superintendent Sheldon Johnson said. "But we must move forward. We must attempt to meet the needs of those that are grieving."

The van was heading east on County Road 24, which has a stop sign as it ends in a T intersection with state Highway 23, the road the bus was traveling. The van struck the bus, which rolled over onto the truck.

The crash remained under investigation Wednesday.

The van was driven by Alianiss N.

Senators Trounce Transportation Officials

Officials from the Texas Department of Transportation fielded tough questions during a three-hour grilling before a joint Senate committee last Tuesday morning, and one of the toughest lines of inquiry came from Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin.

Watson has plenty of reasons to be unhappy with the transportation department. In TxDOT's new world of transportation funding – the world with all those toll roads and public-private partnerships – Central Texas leaders have put their credibility on the line, most recently with a vote last October to, once more, approve a set of toll roads. Unknown to them, though, TxDOT already was planning major budget cuts that were going to trickle down to Central Texas. Watson was more than miffed. He was angry during the joint committee meeting of Senate Finance and Senate Transportation and Homeland Security, coldly leading TxDOT Executive Director Amadeo Saenz and Chief Financial Officer James Bass through a series of questions about what they knew and when.

Post Comment

San Francisco Assessor Phil Ting, whose campaign motto last year was "I'm a professional not a politician," took some time off from his city duties this week to, well, do politics.

Ting joined city Board of Education candidate Jane Kim and Board of Ed Prez Norman Yee on a merchant walk in the Richmond district on Tuesday to press the flesh in favor of Proposition A, a school bond on the ballot Nov. 7. Prop. A would authorize the borrowing of $450 million for public school facilities, with the money -- plus interest -- to be paid back over 20 years through a property tax hike (of up to $129 annually for every $400,000 in assessed valuation on a home).

Ting, Kim and Yee showed up together on Clement Street to convey unanimity on Prop. A across what passes as the political diversity of San Francisco.
